Giants Draft: Day Three Thoughts

After two days of drafting, the first two picks the Giants made look great, the third has sent Giant Nation into a tizzy.   I can understand that because everyone waits for this all year, and they hate it when their team passes up perceived value for player people aren't as familiar with.   In taking Jay Bromley with their 3rd round pick, they went off everyone's board, and left players like Trai Thomas and, sadly Chris Watt on the board after they picked.  I really, really wanted Chris Watt as the other end of the OL fix from this draft, but that's gone by the board.   What people believe has happened now is that the Giants reached for a 3 tech on account of positional scarcity.

That will be a bad and really stupid thing to have done if that's what they did.  But I don't know that to be true yet, and if they want to be honest, neither do they.   Here's why, know about him or not, the dude had 10 sacks from the DT position last year.  He's big, athletic and productive.  What's not to like about that?  I'm not sure, as it's all stuff I like.   And it helps the pass rush.   They also say, he'll be rotational.    That's true, but virtually all defensive linemen are rotational these days.  So starter or non-starter he could play next year.  And if he can give us a few sacks, well bravo.   We may have a player.   Of course, we also may not.

If the Giants had been as historically good in the third round as they have been in the second, we'd have more than 8 titles. And what might have happened tonight is, they might have reached.   I have been telling you this whole time that they would take a 3-tech at some point and they did, but did they take him earlier than they had to because they were worried about positional scarcity?  It's an awful way to draft, and we won't really know if that's what they did till the kid plays.   So I'm just going to follow his story for now.

It's an intriguing one, and I'll also be rooting for the kid.   Btw, two more DT's went off the board in short order and that usually means you're in the right positional range.

So what's still left for tomorrow?

The Giants have four picks to go, and they still need to fix the OL.  Chris Watt is now gone,  so's Turner.   So it may be more difficult.  They really just have to find one more guy here, and David Yankey, who has fallen a long way, could be the guy.  I also like Dakota Dozier.  They could also go RB in 4 and try to hit the OL with one or both of their fifth round picks.

I told you earlier that I believe they have a lower level OL or two stashed, and that may be why they were so apparently cavalier with their third round pick.  I do love the OL that they took, so I hope they have one or two more in mind.   Beyond that, maybe they can get a 4-3 linebacker or an instinctive safety.   They might even draft an edge rusher.   But it's most important that they get the OL fixed.  Was at the start and will be at the finish.
