Yanks Sign Ellsbury for 7/153
Yesterday I was at meetings all day, so I couldn't get at this. Almost unbelievably the Yanks signed Ellsbury to just about the salary slot they had for Cano. I don't know if this means that Cano is a goner, but it sure seems to mean 189 is a goner. In Ellsbury they are getting a Johnny Damon type player who is younger than Johnny was when we got him and is also faster. Like McCann, who should hit homers at YS, and his major bugaboo has been injuries. Since they'd already punted their number 18 pick with McCann, this doesn't upset me. It also means no Beltre or Choo. It could also mean Brett Gardner is heading somewhere. Teams have long been asking for Gardner, as well as Eduardo Nunez, and with the Ellsbuty and Ryan signings they could be heading off in trades. This was a stunning development. Though, when I looked at the original FA list, I sort of looked at Ellsbury and said, "Well, that's something George would do." I don't hate it, and he could really produce in YS. Now let's get Cano and Tanaka.

I absolutely LOVE this deal. People try and label him as injury prone but his injuries were freak accidents and not as if he has had chronic hamstring or back injuries of sort.
As you mentioned, this move gives the Yankees a ton of flexibility with their current roster to make additional moves.
I also feel this gives the Yanks additional leverage in talks with Cano, as in to say look, we've replaced your production in 2 players at premium positions. This is our best offer and if your not taking it, we're going in other directions.
This deal also indicates to me that the Yanks feel Ellsbury & McCann are better faces for the franchise for when Jeter is gone. They don't have the stigma of not-hustling as Cano does and will probably sell more tickets.
Personally, I prefer Ellsbury/McCann @ 7/250 over Cano @ 9/250.
I think there is A LOT more that has yet to happen and with the winter meetings right around the corner, this is going to get very very interesting.
Seems like Kelly Johnson is next.
By most accounts both McCann and Ellsbury are both great clubhouse guys as well. I see both of these as no lose moves. I do agree there is alot more to come.
I just miss the draft picks. And am concerned McCann will either C too long or be a DH right away. I think both players will rake in YS and I have long felt they should stack the roster and home lineup with guys who could do just that.
That's how they won about 21 of the championships.
I'm just happy they traded away Chris Stewart so Girardi doesn't have him as his fall back option. I do like Girardi as a manager but don't like the fact that he appears to be looking for his clone at catcher.
