Mason Williams and Ben Gamel Promoted

Today, the Yanks promoted one of their best prospects, CF Mason Williams, and one of their most interesting prospects, OF Ben Gamel from Tampa to Trenton.   Williams should be filling in for the injured Slade Heathcott in CF.  Gamel will probably rotate between the corners and DH.

Mason Williams had an awful start to the season but then caught fire in June and reminded us he still has a chance to be something special.    Ben Gamel has been a slow and steady producer.    They both have questions.    Williams has some about his attitude and power ceiling, while Gamel has a big question about his power floor.    Williams will be a major league CF.    Gamel will be a 4th OF unless he develops some pop.  Both are lefty bats who's power could be enhanced in the Bronx.   It's great to see the kids moving up in a sort of moribund minor league season thus far.

The fact that Slade is hurt (season-ending) with knee issues has a big "something" to do with these promotions. I am not convinced that Mason will be a star, but he should be a solid Major league OF in the future.

Gamel is very interesting, but needs to show some pop. A .396 slugging percentage will not get it done for a corner OF slot in the Majors. He does have some gap power, as you can see from his 28 doubles. But his 3 HRs this season are a career high. He hit 2 in Charleston in 444 ABs last year, over 110 games.

Hope he turns into a better hitter than his brother was. Mat Gamel was a superb hitter in the Minors, but not a good one in the bigs.
