Yankees Draft: Getting Close
As Preston Claiborne just K'd two more batters, demonstrating one of the Yankees more successful draft strategies of the Damon Oppenheimer & Co. drafting philosophy, my attention turns to the events that will start unfolding this Thursday. Of course the successful strategyI was referring to was Yankee practice of loading up on collegiate power relievers. In any draft, as in regular baseball, starters and position players are more valuable than relievers, so where the Yanks generally pick they've been able to cherry pick college relievers like Preston (who just gave up 2 hits in a row).
This year it could be a little different because they do have the 3 first rounders, and what I'm really interested in seeing is not so much who but what they pick. They have 8.4M to spread around, and I think I'd just as soon see them go for three preps with those top picks, then go 2 preps and 1 collegian or 2 collegians and one prep. Picking collegians would indicate they're saving money for the later rounds. I'm not sure they have to do that since they have so much cash. And they shouldn't do that because there will never be more talent available to them them in this draft than there will be in the first round. Since the very best college players tend to go early, the Yanks will probably have their pick of three very high end prep position players or and pitchers. I hope that's what they do. Then I hope none of the kids we take pull a Gerrit Cole on us. Go Yanks!
