Belated Opening Day Post

Mo started what may be his last season with a blow save and a loss. That should tied him over till July. CC gave up a grandslam in the first inning then battled. Yanks had their chances to break it open but couldn't get it done. The rest of the pen looked healthy and it should be a strength going forward. Girardi overmanaged. I think we're gonna have to get used to that. I think Kuroda makes his debut tonight and he could have some luck the first time or two around the AL. Go Yanks!

PS: sorry I was away yesterday. And in general, I don't write up losses anymore. I'll start writing some longer draft pieces for the Giants and the others as the Spring wears on. Also, if you'd like, I'll write some more long pieces about the Yankee Farm system.

Phil, what are your thoughts on this? I feel like the Yankees have too many players who are built around the "big hit" mentality, in that they go up looking to get "the big hit" with runners in scoring position.

This team for years now, even in '09 when they won it all, has been poor with RISP. I feel this is because with all the emphasis on OBP and SLG, we've lost value in players that don't try to do too much, that know how to go the other way and take what the pitcher gives them, instead of going up there trying to hit the ball as hard and as far as they can. They usually end up just getting themselves out.

I think they're inefficient. They create so many base runners when they are grinding away, that they are bound to leave a lot on base. But they do have some guys who get impatient and stop grinding and waiting for their pitch in big spots. They need to keep grinding.

Having Montero would have been nice, even if they didn't think he could catch long-term (they could just groom him to eventually take over at 1B).

I think a much bigger issue, though, is the Yankees' lack of ability to develop starting pitchers. Look at the Rays' staff, for example. While some of their pitchers are lottery picks (Price, Niemann), others were taken outside of the first round (Shields, Hellickson, Matt Moore).

The fact that the Yankees have only Nova, who was solid last year but is still young, and Hughes, who can't finish hitters off, in their rotation is pretty damning.

Give us whatever you got kalel. Whatever moves you to write. I think this blog is more interesting when your sports words are more than game recaps. Music and movies too.
