Giants Pass on Steve Smith

The news coming up the turnpike is that the Giants first down machine, Steve Smith has signed with the hated Eagles. And I feel fine. Here's why. If anything, the Giants have erred on the side of talent in allowing Smith to sign a one year deal down in crapland. Smith was injured and the Giants didn't like what they saw of that injury yesterday. What's more, there is no guarantee Smith would ever get back to where he was. And where was he? He was a first down catcher, not a touchdown catcher. The Giants have two of those, Nicks and Manningham, who they will have to pay soon. And they should. Smith was also a body catcher, and his habit of engulfing the ball rather than catching it with his hands, lead to him taking insane punishment. There are going to be more injuries if he comes back. And he could not catch a ball over his shoulder and in stride. He was a run to a spot, catch and fall guy. I will forever be grateful for the big play he made in Super Bowl 42, but the year he caught 100 balls, we went 8-8. Eli should have been throwing 100 more times to Nicks and Manningham. Going forward, he will.

It will be interesting to see what else the Giants do now that they don't have to pay Boss or Smith. Go Giants!

To say they are taking a beating from fans is an understatement, not just for passing on Smith, but for their approach to Free Agency as a whole..My biggest issue with Reese is his refusal to address linebacker, especially when Mara said at the end of last year we needed to upgrade there, and specials. I definitely understand the concern on the Giants part, that if your doctors are telling you he will miss 1/2 the season you really can't pay him. I believe if the Giants miss the playoffs, Coughlin will be gone. While many will want Reese to be gone as well, the way the Mara's work we know that he will get another shot or will he?

We's upgraded the crap out of specials, and we got Kiwi back for LB, and they really like the young talent they've collected at LB. And it's not that big a deal in our defense. DL's and DB's are.

Reese is one of the best GM's in football and will be on the job for a long time.

I really like the Weatherford signing, and loved the Jernigan pick. I also think hiring Izzo will net positive results. I know they like the LB talent, but they have to produce. I was a big proponent of signing Boley, and he has to step up this year. As you predicted it appears now Osi will calm down, so that is a plus. I totally disagree with Cris Carter stating he is done. I can understand fans frustration with Reese though for his lack of moves in Free Agency. We all know that teams on paper generally don't win. We need to have a big picture approach, that they are making the lines even younger, and hope they develop chemistry quickly. I unlike most fans(esp on BBI) think Canty is going to be a force for us, and will only help guys like Austin and Linval.

Our past 2 drafts have been big. And we struck gold in UDFA this year. The Giants aren't done making moves, but they have gotten a good deal on everyone they have signed. They are making value driven decisions and they didn't overpay any of their own FA's-- like they did under GY and Ernie at times.

They're gonna be able to lock up Mario and Hakeem and TT and KP etc. They have this figured out. They really do. Canty will continue to be good and underrated and JPP, Linval and Marvin will electrify this front. Having Osi back and Kiwi will also be huge for that fresh, relentless pass rush.

The Giants are great drafters, and it's about to really pay off.

I think the old saying you rather cut a guy a year early then a year late applies here. Getting Mario,TT,KP and Hakeem locked up are absolute musts. I hope Barden can get on the field this year as I think he has a lot of potential. I was a big fan of Hynoski and Herzlich signings. Hynoski is gonna be a huge upgrade esp in the passing game where we can use him as a weapon. I'm totally enthused about The front 4. I reall wanna see Linval and Marvin grow. Canty as you said underrated and will be a positive force on and off the field. A healthy Kiwi is huge and JPP has already shown us signs of what he can do. I am a big fan of Baas as now Eli won't have to be running for his life. it's a process, but hopefully it all clicks sooner later!

And yes our last 2 drafts should really start to pay dividends

this reminds me so much of 2007, but we have a better roster now.

definitely. 2007 no one expected anything, and look how surprised we were. While not a big name per say I really think Baas is going to be a huge plus for the running game and passing game. I can't remember how many times I would tell my brother, and friends watching games over the past 2 years or so how Ohara was getting pushed back, and Diehl was better at guard. Bradshaw/Jacobs should have better running lanes now.. I still hope they bring back Andrews to make our depth even stronger on the line. Do you think that Jerningan will be mainly specials Phil or will they get some plays for him at WR?

I think JJ wil be on offense, too. They'll have a package of plays for him.
