Kawika Comin'?

The Giants will apparently be kicking the tires on UFA LB Kawika Mitchell. As blog readers will recall, he was one of the guys we were talking about on the first night of FA. He's basically a two down run force LB, but he's young and healthy and we can scheme coverage around his shortcomings.

UPDATE: I think Mitchell is a Giant. Also, he was not the only non-Giant at the Stadium today, so there may be other news.

FURTHER UPDATE: There were SEVERAL players in taking physicals for the Giants today. Could not confirm any names, but several implies a good number.

SOME GOOD NEWS: The Giants got a comp pick! #41 in the 7th round. We can't trade it, but we now have 8 overall picks with 2 in the 7th. I think we need 10 or 11 picks.

Looks like there is no deal for spikes

or Wilson.

At 8:52 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

lol you know one of them is gonna go to the eagles though and have a healthy year

At 9:23 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

without a doubt.

At 9:45 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is it one of the three or a combination of two?

At 9:47 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

We need two LB's, I am not sure if anyone on our roster would work as a starter. I like the names mentioned but not at the cost or with the baggage they would bring.

At 9:48 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I guess we'll find out.

At 9:53 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I still hold out hope however remote it is for Briggs.

At 9:54 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

talk about costing too much...

At 10:09 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think he is the best option, and agree he will cost too much. I hope we wind up with 2 LB's of the group.

At 10:17 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kawika could be a nice addition for the Giants and a definite upgrade over what we had. I hope the Giants can work this out.

At 1:29 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

takeo spikes there for a physical

At 1:30 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

could be. I expect Spikes or Wilson to still join us.

At 1:40 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Finally some good news :)

At 1:41 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

seems like their finally hitting some needs before they're forced to on Day 1 of the draft.

At 1:43 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Any word on why it's only a 1 year deal? (Schefter has it on NFL.com) Will Spikes or Wilson be leaked today as well?

At 1:45 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

probably for cap flex and so Wilson can hit FA again at 28. Players have done that when they weren't getting the multi-years they wanted in first FA.

We'll see if anything else leaks today, if it's a trade like Wilson or Spikes, it probably will.

At 1:47 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

(m123)I like the thinking. At this point given both of their injury concerns which of the two would you prefer Spikes or Wilson? I myself would prefer Spikes based on upside. I hope it's him we get

At 1:48 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I'd take whoever has the better medical prognosis.

At 2:58 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Garafolo and Staple say it's done. Good Job Phil!! Can we expect Spikes or Wilson as well today?

At 2:59 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

maybe. I know there was a lot of traffic there today.

At 3:07 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's what we want to hear traffic, leading to deals. Let's go Jerry!! 1 year 1 million is a great deal b/c he will be motivated to earn a big payday next offseason.

At 3:12 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just got back...1 year 1 million not bad at all...i doubt we make any more moves LB wise

At 3:13 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I've always heard 2 before the draft and still think so.

At 3:18 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

i wouldnt be suprised, but the way this FA market has been i wouldnt expect it...

p.s. how did Igawa pitch today

At 3:18 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree with the thinking of getting 2 prior to the draft. Whomever we may draft can have time to develop rather then being forced to play. If the price is right and the doctors clear him I am on board for Spikes.

At 3:20 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Igawa was good. He's coming along and his breaking stuff is freezing guys right now.

I've been trying to confirm whether or not Spikes was in for a physical for the past few hours. Don't have a direct response on it yet and now I'm off to a meeting. So stay tuned and root for the Knicks till I get back!

At 3:20 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dan what are your thoughts on Spikes?

At 3:26 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good Luck on the Meeting...Spikes, I Would Love to Have Him, absolutely love it...i mean if we can give up a 4th/5th round pick for him it would a great trade...guy got hurt two years ago only injury and people are crying that hes injury prone...Pierce/Spikes/Mitchell would be a consistend LB Group

At 3:27 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

and i would say if we were to get Wilson or Spikes...We will draft a WR in the first round, most likely Jarrett

At 3:30 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thank you Dan. I want Spikes if he is healthy, he has talent.

At 3:42 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I would have no complaints with that at all taking Jarrett in Rd 1. Are you hearing anything further on Spikes or Wilson?

At 3:43 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good Luck with the meeting!

At 3:46 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I heard wilson was dead dead and more dead and with Spikes i heard there was little interest but Phil has much better resources to hear things

At 5:38 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Okay, guys, back from the meeting and check the update! Several players were given physicals for the Giants today.

At 5:39 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

no idead though if any of the guys were Spike

At 5:46 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

No clue, but I wouldn't be surprised if one was.

At 5:55 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

im suprised nothing is being leaked for anyone there today...JR is really making these physicals very quiet

At 5:56 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Not only have leaks been plugged, but they don't even meet with everyone at the complex.

At 5:59 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

well according to this http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2813818&campaign=rss&source=NFLHeadlines.....serious trade talks between eagles/bills and we're not even interested

At 6:07 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

we'll see how things play out. There were several players over there taking physicals today.

At 6:08 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

also eagles are looking into getting holcomb with Spikes deal....so that settles that

At 6:10 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Its hard to even guess who could be there, their's not much players left on the FA market that will make an impact, so if i were to guess i would say gmen are gonna be signing players that will give them better depth

At 6:15 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

we'll see.

At 6:47 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Now I am curious as to wonder whom was there?? Hopefully we hear something soon.

At 6:48 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

considering what's left out there, it's hard to come up with several, but someone who would know said several.

At 6:49 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

well Eagles officially traded for Spikes and Holcomb...Walker and Conditional 7th

At 6:51 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

and the pick is a 2008 7th round pick

At 6:58 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

looks like we will be drafting a LB with the first pick or we should be...the only LB left out there that could make a difference is Wilson

At 6:59 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

we have enough LB's with Mitchell. I still think we'll get another before the draft, but with the shape Toomer's in, we are almost certainly going WR.

At 7:53 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

i dunno i like mitchell and of course pierce but we need someone else who would be a good fit

At 7:55 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

but it doesn't have to be a first rounder. Willis will be gone and he's the only first rounder worth it. Poz and Timmons are overrated.

At 7:58 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

lol so is this giants defense...and the only WR i see us drafting is Jarrett

At 8:10 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Redskins talking trade for briggs...swap of first round picks

At 8:10 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

could be Jarrett, could be Meachem, could be Bowe.

At 9:44 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mitchell might not even be a done deal

At 9:45 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

bs. Abramson got it done while Reese was out of town with the owners. They'll come back tomorrow and make it "official."

At 9:55 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

on a totally off topic question, did you see the movie pursuit of happiness...i just saw a commercial for it and it looked good

p.s. How did ur meeting go today

At 9:56 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I didn't and my meeting went great.

At 9:59 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

well good to hear about your meeting

At 10:01 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

thanks. At the beginning of FA, after the two big targets were off the market, the plan was supposedly to sign and announce a few at a time. I think we're close to seeing that.

At 10:03 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

lol we only have signed one so far

At 10:04 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

and we've announced NONE.

At 10:36 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Ian Scott is not signing with Atlanta.

At 10:45 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wonder what signing is announced first...any kind of giant FA move or Clemens signing with the Yanks

On the Scott front, why isnt he even mentioned to be linked to the Gmen as possible teams

At 11:16 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

he's been mentioned with the Giants before.
