Rocket Redux?

With Randy Johnson back from vacation and negotiating with the D-Backs, a trade for some collection of young players should be completed in the next few days. Reports are that the Yanks will then turn their attention to bringing Roger Clemens back for a full, not partial season. This would be a great get for the Yanks, as he's another pitcher who wouldn't require a long deal, and might be a good influence on Hughes, etc.

It will be impossible to render an opinion pro or con on the Johnson deal before all of players and Yankee dollars are known. Obviously if the Yanks are throwing in a big fraction of Randy's salary, they have to get back top prospects or young major leaguers

I doubt that Clemens will be effective for an entire season, and I'm also skeptical that he can put up an ERA much under 4.50.

That said, he's the best of the available options.

The Yankees' rotation will be extremely fragile until they are willing to transition to Hughes, Sanchez, etc.

I think all of these short deals for starters are telling us they plan to work Hughes, etc. in this year. I think they'll pace Clemens even if he does show up in Spring, and use the kids to keep the older guys fresh for October.

I don't like the sound of this:

I agree, that would suck. Unless Owings and Eveland are the two minor league pitchers. I'd still be pissed for we don't get Carter or Jackson.

cashman better have something else up his sleeve, because he's about to weaken the team

I'm sure he does. His patience is a strength of the organization, but it's hard to adjust to when you've grown up on Steinbrenner.

This isn't thrilling, either.

One thing Steinbrenner did was to use his money to increase the talent base. Cash better be doing the same thing in this deal, writ large.

rich, Cash has been doing that in the international signings and the draft all year.

Even granting your point, that doesn't give him a pass if he fails to do it in the RJ trade.

I think I'd rather do the Padres deal. If Randy doesn't like it, he can remain in NYC.

i literally got sick reading that the yankees are close to signing doug mz.... this team isn't a championship caliber team as it stands right now...

i think the final deal will be

owings
ohledorf
vizcaino

and the yankees will end up sending 2-4 mil. color me unimpressed.

by the way, i understand cashman's mantra of wanting to stockpile young arms, but it seems to have become almost a borderline obsession for him, and he's not thinking through trades very rationally anymore.

The Record reports that:

Money issues aside, the sentiment remained that the Yankees were committed to moving Johnson back to Arizona, and that Owings and reliever Brandon Medders could arrive in return.

According to one National League scout, Owings is better than any of the three pitchers the Yankees received from the Tigers for Sheffield -- including right-hander Humberto Sanchez, who was the key to the deal.

Sanchez, 23, went a combined 10-6, with a 2.63 ERA in Class AA and Class AAA stints last season, with 129 strikeouts and 47 walks in 123 innings. But the right-hander has had elbow problems.

"If he were [as] good [as people say], he'd be in the big leagues already," the scout said of Sanchez.
___

Does the scout know that Sanchez was hurt?

I don't believe Owings is on anyone's top 50 prospect list.

I think Owings is the most interesting pitcher they had. I think he has a very high upside. He's only been a fulltime pitcher for a couple of years. Also, I like Ohlendorf more than Nippert. If you're gonna be as tall as Nippert, you need to throw 95 and he doesn't. And I don't care about fungible set-up guys.
