Well, there are now media reports that they Yanks have agreed on a three player package for Randy Johnson. Sadly, it seems at this time that there is no possible core bat in the mix. The most likely takeback is Owings (who I like), Ohlendorf (sinker baller who has a good K rate) and either Medders or Vizcaino (fungible relievers). If we look at this possibility in isolation, it would appear that Cashmoney Green has not taken advantage of this historically high pitching market. If we look at it in the context of other possible moves getting Clemens in would be good, but trading the major league reliever we acquire and Melky for Mike Gonzales would be troubling.
We seem to be cornering the young right hander pitching market but a short term shortage of impact bats is looming like a funnel cloud.
UPDATE: Apparently the Yanks have denied the DBacks a shot at face to face negotiation, and I'm hearing the Padres may have actually moved into first place in the Randy sweepstakes! Stay tuned!

in related news, the sox just got piniero for $4 mil... i just crapped myself laughing
If the Yankees won't grant a 72 hour window, it would seem to be because they feel that they aren't getting enough back from the D'backs.
This link states that Owings has mediocre stuff:
I have to respectfully disagree with a few of the points made in Gambadoro's column. Gambadoro's main argument seems to be that Arizona shouldn't trade Micah Owings because he went 10-0 at Triple A despite admittedly mediocre stuff. While Owings is a mildly interesting prospect, his record shouldn't be a factor here. You'd be surprised who can go 10-0 when Lady Luck comes calling.
Rich, he throws hard and has only been a full time pitcher for two years. He's got a great arm.
OK, but I still think the scout who said he's better than Sanchez is high (or perhaps merely disingenuous).
I don't think he's better than Sanchez, but I think he has big time upside.
Travis Lee?
Cash needs to give up this handedness thing. It's unbecoming.

According to Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown, the Yankees and Diamondbacks aren't only still working on financial details of a Randy Johnson deal, but they've also yet to agree on the players involved.
The Yankees are still focusing on the deal with Arizona, but the Padres haven't been told they're out of it, according to Brown's source. Yankees GM Brian Cashman has told both teams he would like to have a deal done by the end of the week.

btw, That makes sense. It explains why no 72 hour window has been granted.
Take no prisoners, Cash.
Olbermann says Randy says he's been traded.
He's on in the afternoon here. I must have missed that.
I think he said it on TV.
Ugh.
