More Yanks!

The Yanks finally completed their 2 year 22.5M deal with Mike Mussina. This should keep him in pinstripes, where he belongs, until retirement. Not only can Moose continue to give the Yanks 180 or so quality innings, but over the past few years he, as well as Mo Rivera, has shown a great generosity in sharing what he knows with prospects like Philip Hughes and Tyler Clippard. Big time teen prospect Dellin Betances also throws a knuckle curve and will benefit from talking to the masters. I love this deal.

I am currently starting to lean in the direction of signing Barry Zito, if he really wants to be a Yankee and will be reasonable. I know there is great demand for him, but if the Yanks could get something done, he could give them 200 middle of the rotation innings a year while keeping the farm safe. The tier of pitchers in which I was originally interested are completely erratic and totally fungible, and, like Wright and Pavano before them, generally come with injury flags. Sources were supposedly telling George King that the Yanks were listening to offers for Humberto Sanchez and that is not what they should be doing. Dontrelle Willis may also be in play, but he'd cost a fortune it youth and we've had trouble with National League pitchers coming up to the AL and getting smoked - see Vazquez, Johnson, Pavano and Wright. What's more, Dontrelle's delivery really has to have the Yanks worried about future arm health. Zito is really looking like the safe bet from where things stand this morning. Of course, things could change.

The thing is, is that Johnson and Pavano might not be ready to start the season, so they have to get someone. And, with only sort of average to crappy pitchers available in FA, the alternative would be trading Sanchez or Clippard and Melky and stuff. By far their best option is to work something out with Boras and Zito.

I don't think I'd go that high on Zito, but I don't trust Torre not to kill the pen due to his impatience with low brand name pitchers. Our major problem right now is the health of projected starters Johnson and Pavano. I'd like to get at least one better than league average pitcher to stard the season, while saving the farm and keeping a rotation spot available for one of the kids.

He hasn't made anyone miss in like 4 years. We don't want to bring in more damaged goods with Johnson and Pavano rehabbing, do we?

We can't take on any more health risks with Johnson and Pavano no sure bets, can we?

That's why we might as well make a Yankee push for Zito. Otherwise, we're gonna end up trading some pitchers with very high upside, when they could be our inexpensive assets for years to come.

Four years, $56 million.
