This Week On the Blog
It was interesting week as the Yanks started getting players back, the Giants welcomed their rookies, the Rangers continued their hot streak, and the Knicks kept scouting the playoffs. Let's take a look at what might be coming this week.
Yankees: the Yanks are getting Andujar and LeMahieu back today, and more are on the way. That's the good news. The bad news is that Paxton's left knee was barking last night and they decided to take him out after 3 innings of the Yankee win. They'll do an MRI today, but Boone seemed to think it was just weather related, so he may not miss a start. We'll see. Gary Sanchez is special. He's hit 10 homers in first 18 games this year, and I believe he's slightly ahead of his rookie pace. Wow. I think Frazier may be the next back.
UPDATE: They just put Paxton on the 10 Day IL.
Giants: the Giants are hosting their annual rookie camp. The invitees include the draft picks, the signed UDFA and a ton of tryout players. I'll probably do a post on the even later today or tomorrow, but a lot of the pundits are already starting to walk back their "scouting reports." In other news, come this Tuesday, the Giants can start signing UFA's without the new conctracts effecting the 2020 draft comp picks calculus. I assume they'll bring in a right tackle, perhaps a passrusher and another safety. Still a lot of guys out there, all of whom are better than Wheeler. Could buy the Giants some time till they can find some young tackles to develop for Jones.
Rangers: the Rangers had one of their biggest weeks since winning the cup in `94. First, the traded for 21 year old D Adam Fox. He'll be playing for Team USA in the World's if you want a preview. Then they signed Kravstov and Shersterkin, so there's every chance they'll play for the team this year. Then, without lifting finger, their 2nd first rounder in June's entry draft, went from #21 to #20. And if the Stars advance to their conferenct finals, they'll pick up yet another one. So expect it. I guess it's possible that they'll sign Rykov this week, but I have no idea of what great thing will happen next. They deserve this.
Knicks: the Knicks have been sending their pro scouts to work the playoffs. I guess that's because they have cap room. I'd still prefer they build through the draft. Same for all these teams. But it seems they'll blow their cap on two max contracts. It's importaant that they have some lottery luck come May 15.
So there it is, Yanks getting guys back, Giants trying guys out, Rangers on a roll, and Knicks determined to spend. Have a great one!

Happ is crapp
Neither he nor CC can be relied upon in October, when stuff will be at a premium, IMO.
Does anyone know what’s actually going on with Stanton?
Gonna piggyback off something Rich has brought up previously: If Didi gets healthy this year, then he should obviously play. Beyond this season, though, does it make more sense to shift Gleyber back to his natural position and put LeMahieu at second full-time? As much as I like Didi the player and person, it's reasonable to assume the Yankees have already gotten his best years.
I like LeMahieu.
It’s noteworthy that Shurmur has strongly emphasized Jones’ mobility and how important that is in the NFL at this point in time. He still has to prove, however, he can force it into tight spots when the wind is blowing hard at the Meadowlands.
Again, the failure to take one OL high in this draft is not going’s to make his job any easier if he does play this season.
I think he does have to play by midseason if they are right about his upside.
Severino is out for many more months.
German is sort of acey.
Did the Yankees a favor.
Tauchman has showed nothing.
Tauchman had a good game or two, but they really need Frazier back.
Blind squirrel meets acorn. Ha.
Gardner is toasty.
German is establishing himself as a top tier starter
Yep. If they can get at least one more starter to develop from the minors they may not need to sign Cole this offseason.
Cording to the New York Post they seem to be a little too high on Tauchman, but I would play him over Gardner.
Decent half inning.
Good win. Estrada a highlight.
CC is pretty much a one turn through the lineup guy now.
As RAB said, how can you give Tulo Urshela’s roster spot? And Urshela doesn’t have mL options.
You can’t. You can possibly send down Andujar to let him get his timing back and maybe take reps at first but you can’t really justify sitting any of the infielders right now.
Gio Urshela: The legend continues.
Yeah. Crazy. He said he has been working on hitting the ball the other way with power for the last couple of years.
And as mentioned above, we like LeMahieu.
New year, same shit. This time Syndergaard. Why? They have German, who the Mets would definitely want in return but would be moronic to give up, Paxton, Tanaka, Sev. So who’s not pitching in the playoffs if they got him? Ridic.
Frazier got robbed.
Do you no hitters come in bunches? Asking for a friend.
Makes that robbed hit against Frazier even worse
They are squaring him up, getting solid contact, finding holes...
Kikuchi has been really good.
German is on pace for about 188 innings. He has thrown more than 100 innings just twice in his career — 123 ²/₃ in 2017 and 123 ¹/₃ in 2014, the season before he underwent Tommy John surgery.
Brian Cashman would not specify to The Post’s Joel Sherman what number the Yankees have their eye on for German’s limit this season, but the general manager said it is something they will monitor.
“We have caps in play,” Cashman told Sherman. “Obviously, it is part of managing that is part of the program. We try to make sure safeties are on players to protect them.”
Sherman, who first reported the German innings limit in Wednesday’s Post, estimated a cap of 150 innings. German threw 94 innings last year, but just 10 ²/₃ of those came after July 26 — when he left a Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre game early and was diagnosed with an ulnar nerve injury.
Pitching coach Larry Rothschild said German’s case is a little different than other young pitchers because of how long he has been around. German signed with the Marlins as an international free agent in 2009 and made his pro debut in 2010. He entered this season with 561 pro innings under his belt across eight seasons — excluding 2015, when he sat out while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Frazzled could easily have had three hits tonight.
Fra...zier
No timetable on Judge and Stanton, per Boone. Judge I get, but what the heck is wrong with Stanton?
They suck at rehab.
Happ not crapp tonight but need to go deeper.
I get this.
Ryan Divish
@RyanDivish
Gordon: "I was pissed off. It was the second time he threw up by my head. You've got to get the ball down. You can't throw that pitch. I got a family. You need to get the ball, you need to get the ball the f&^% down. That's twice. If you can't throw that pitch, don't throw it."

Gardner is done. Tauchman should get his AB.
I hate this for Gardner, I really do, but he isn’t a starting outfielder anymore, and frankly, until Maybin cools off, he should get priority over Gardner.
Whoever found Gio Urshela deserves a World Series ring if the Yankees win it all this year.
Urshela: .416 OBP, .532 SLG, +0.9 WAR in 89 PA
Judge: .404 OBP, .521 SLG, +0.9 WAR in 89 PA

Yeah, this wasn’t foreseeable by anyone, but it may have saved their season to this point.
