Rangers Acquire Eric Staal
The Rangers just made their annual "all-in" Big Splash Trade. This time they gave up a pair of second rounders and ascendant Finnish prospect Aleksi Saarela for the honor of adding the declining Hurricane center and captain. Their problem really was on D, where Eric's brother is among the problems. The picks aren't so bad, btw, the Rangers have been good at getting 2's, and at least this year's trade didn't involve another 1.
Meanwhile, Saarela had gone off at the WJC earlier this year, and the Rangers plethora of impressive Euro's just took a major hit. Not sure why they had to put Saarela in the deal, although Carolina is retaining enough salary to make it fit for the Rangers.
Let's hope Staal can get hot. He'll need to to make up for his bro's and Girardi's defensive issues.

They have gutted the franchise in recent years solely to boost Sather's rep and the result is that his rep keeps getting worse.
We should have off loaded players and created cap room to sign our own free agents and others in the off season. Maybe Stepan can give money back now that he'll be the #2/3 center he is playing like...
Don't think this is about Sather's rep as much as they are trying to win a Cup before Lundqvist deteriorates, if he hasn't already.
Agree, it's more about Hank. But, the Rangers are wasting their scouting advantage in two ways: first they've traded away about 10 picks over the last 4-5 years, so their scouts can't make them. Then, when the Scouts still kick ass and find guys like Duclair and Saarela, they use them to couple with picks and grab more vets.
And I still don't think AV is the right coach. Not only has he screwed around with kids, and favored people like Glass, but he's screwed around with Yandle! Who's not a kid and came at a steep price.
They'll be able to gain cap room by trading Nash, and one or two of the non McD, McI, Skjei D's.
I get the Hank aspect as well, but overpaying for an old smurf is just dumb, and I guess I am more cynical about Sather than you guys.
Staal's a big guy, so you're talking about St. Louis, right? That was Sather and he's not President Emeritus or something. You could see at last year's draft that Gorton was reallly frustrated with Sather handling of the Cam Talbot trade and believed he blew it. This time they gave away 2's instead of 1's and got Big and 31 instead of small and 38.
But the situation with Hank and his presumptive window has been the same. I also think Gorton is frustrated with AV, vis a vis his use or lack of use of Yandle and some other stuff.
Yes.
Seems Staal only wanted to play for The Rangers
Wonder what they'll do tomorrow.
I don't get the whole win it before Lundqvist is done, we have very good G prospects. There's life after him. Seems we are putting all our eggs in one Lundqvist basket which will leave us in the cellar for 10 years.
There's that to it, too. But, Buch could be over in a few weeks, and he could change the window combined with the other young guys and Skjei and McIl, and make it a cool succession to Shesterkin at G.
I think there's a difference between a good goalie and one who can put on the sort of sustained burst that can carry a team to the Cup. The Rangers think Lundqvist can win them the Cup. He has a few years at most before his reflexes start to decline, so they're going for it now. That's understandable, but I assume that they're planning on rebuilding in two or three years.
I personally have not been impressed with HL in the playoffs. He lets in too many soft goals in big games. Gets outplayed by inferior goalies. I want to see him dominate from beginning to end.
I actually think they'll be in position to reload rather than rebuld, even with the currently missing picks and prospects. They'll get some picks back when they trade Nash and some others and kids like Skjei and Buch are ready, with more on the way.
Since the MSL trade, including some big contracts to Girardi and Staal, they keep shortening their window to win a Cup. I think that's counterproductive, irrespective of Lundqvist.
They're still going to bring over a ton of talent from Europe. Still have Gropp and and more O talent on the way, And still have a bunch of Big Dmen, after Skjei and McIlrath. Plus they will get picks and pieces from trading Nash and one or two others. If they'd held onto Duclair and Saarela, they'd be in even better shape, but they really do have good scouts and are still in good shape.
They do have good scouts, and they're good at development. That's why trading firsts and top young players so dumb. It's like they don't recognize their strengths
I've been saying that all along, but still, I am pretty fucking astonished by what they still have on the way. They've shown an awesome knack for drafting prospects the year BEFORE they take a big step up.
They won again, and Eric Staal might have boarded a moving train,
Net net I'd still take their future over any team I root for, so yeah Still frustrating.
I separate them from the Yankees because yes, they have some young talent, but they have to show me that they're willing to withstand multiple learning curves before I believe that a substantial number will be part of the team.
If they don't win in '16 or '17, it will be time to back up the truck.
They are going to have to make some pretty important decisions on veteran contracts this off-season.
Buchnevich has gotten a lot bigger since we picked him.
Up 1-0, then give up 3 goals in less than two minutes to end the second.
Was an injury to Hank all or part of the reason?
Pretty clearly, he didn't come out for the third and is out tonight. That's the third or fourth time McDonagh has accidentally hurt a teammate.
Good win.
So far Staal has been as invisible as he was when I was watching some Canes games...
Who was the last over 30 vet they traded for that was really good for them?
Mark Messier was 31 when the Rangers got him.
Even a longer time than I had thought.
I think Jagr was over 30, too. So, definitely, was Shanahan who gave them a good season.
Staall has a goal and an assist through the first period tonight.
Rangers lost in a game where they came back from 3-0 and 4-3 to tie it. No Hank.
