Breaking: Yanks Trade Cervelli to the Pirates
The Yanks have traded C Francisco Cervelli to the Pirates. I've been hoping they would trade Cervelli for the past few years. Not that I don't like him, just that I thought he had value and we had replacements on hand. Let's see what we got.
It was for lefty reliever Justin Wilson, who's 27 and just came off a bad year. Got excited when I thought it could be players from the Pirate system. This is just another arm.
This also means that in the past 24 hours, the Yanks have added 2 lefty relievers to their 40 man roster. How are they going to fit Lindgren, Webb and Pazos? Let alone their relievers who are Rule 5 eligible?

More moves that have both pushed the Yankees over the top and given them Robertson insurance. 2015 or bust!
(In all seriousness, they probably just want to give Murphy the BUC job. But that's a weak return for a guy who has shown a decent bat at times.)
I agree, and think we lost the trade.
I do get that his lefty splits are huge, especially considering who the manager is, but if this blocks Lindgren then I'm going to be pissed.
Relievers are all they seem to know so the guy may have upside. Apart from that this trade is just too late. They have already retarded Murphy's development.
It does seem like the Pirates want every catcher who has ever played for the New York Yankees in the last few years.
I think they see Lundgren as the primary set up man to Betances. We'll see what happens
Lindgren
The Bio thing took a lot of luster from Frankie for me but I have a soft spot for him because all through the minors he was one of the most up beat players i have ever met.I think on the surface it looks like we gave him up for a project and I would have expected more.I have heard the staff really liked his game calling. This also tells me there is a trade in the works.
How does adding a left-handed reliever give them chips to trade?
They can't trade Lindgren till June, so it hasn't been made so they can...
Yeah that's my point so I don't see a trade coming because of this trade.
If they make a trade, it will likely be to bolster the offense, possibly ar short, but Cashman said the prices are very high, so who knows what they're willing to pay and for what.
I think they will trade Phelps and maybe some of the crap from the 40...
Since Phelps is now an injury risk, I don't see them getting much for that.
This guy has control issues, but if there is one strength to the coaching staff, it's Rothschild. So there's that.
The one thing I don't like is that Girardi over manages to a dangerous extent. . So I would like to keep the bullpen as simple as possible for him. But this doesn't likely lead to that happening.
I was kind of hoping that Cervelli or Murphy would be traded in a package to CWS to get Ramirez.
I am sure Cashman has a plan for SS.
They have Burawa,Pazos,Webb and Lindgren all on the come and we acquire two new lefty relief guys lends me to believe one or two of the above will be involved in a possible trade..As far as lindgren goes ,its not like you can't trade him you just call him The PTBNL.
There's pretty much 0 chance they trade Lindgren. But if they did make him a PTBNL what would he do till June?
Trading a potentially dominant, cost-controlled LH reliever merely because you acquired an up and down reliever, makes no sense.
Cashman has a plan? Heh.
If they traded both Murphy and Cervelli, who is the BUC?
Oh, you said, or!!! Sorry.
Anway, Ramirez will cost a big prospect. No thanks.
You guys turned your opinion of a trade not forth coming into getting rid of Lindgren. I just said it's not impossible to trade him..I don't think they will but they can.I also don't see it as far fetched that we could be dealing any of the others as a point of strength. We are loaded with possible lefty relief prospects then add to it.
I differ with you, yf, because I think he's unique.
But if you want to trade him, he will have way more value after he proves himself in the ML, which I think he will do very quickly.
I am also skeptical that they will give Robertson a big deal.
I recently read that Hal said he sees no reason to spend $220m or whatever because no one else does, and he raised the $189m thing again.
So if true, they will look to save where they can, and the places to do that are scarce.
Of course, no one else has as many bad contracts or is so poor at development or so unwilling to give their best prospects an extended opportunity, even before craptastic Roberts and Capuano types, but Hal is either willfully blind or an idiot.
Cervelli has been injury prone and is out of options. I don't know what type of return people are looking for from that profile.
I think a hard throwing lefty reliever who can face LH and RH batters is a good get. Add in that he still has 2 options, I think the return is justified. He should be our Boone Logan for this season.
The more I look at it, the more I feel Billy Martin is right, in that you probably aren't getting much better in return for a BUC, even one who has shown some plate discipline like Cervelli.
My main worry, again, is that he'll block Lindgren. But Hal listed Lindgren as someone he expects to contribute this coming season, so I'm willing to let it play out.
I don't hate the trade, as I said, perhaps the only thing they have been good at is identifying relievers.
As a general point though, I hate trading offense for pitching.
I worry that dumbfuck Girardi will use Lindgren as a Loogy if Wilson earns Girardi's "trust."
I don't see Frankie as the BUC being they have not to my knowlege signed Martin at this point,
Sounds like they're going to spend some money, but perhaps not traditionally.
