Ugh

The Yankees have once again traded Jesus Montero to the Mariners. This time along with Hector Noesi for Pineda and another RHP named Jose Campos. This is ludicrous. Montero is the best hitting prospect the Yanks have developed since Mantle, and comes along at a time when Posada has retired and most of their other Yankee Bats are over 3o and declining. Pineda is a possible #2 this year and may have ACE upside, but there's a reason they moved Babe Ruth from ACE to hitter and it's the value they give you everyday. Now, it's possible the Yanks think Sanchez is the same hitter as Montero with better defensive potential, but there was no reason not to keep both, as the AL plays with a DH. Campos is supposed to be another high upside pitching prospect, but we'll see.

During the Cashman era, we have traded for pre-established starters like Jeff Weaver and Javy Vazquez and neither panned out. We just sent much more for Pineda and Campos. Let's hope there's something there, and hope the Yanks stop trading Yankee Bats. It takes a lot to piss me off these days, and I've got to say, this comes close.

My first reaction is shock. I wanted Montero in the middle of our lineup for years. These pitchers that we are getting have great upside so we will have to see. I hope the Yanks have committed to going after the Cuban free agent bats.

Doesn't seem to be in their budget.

Not sure I agree with you on this one Kale. Montero was never going to catch with the Yankees and was only going to be a DH. The value of a DH is slim especially in comparison with an Ace SP who is 22 and built like a workhorse.

As you say, with aging bats, who are still signed to long-term deals, they will need to be occupying the DH spot at least once a week. With Teix signed long-term and Montero unable to play an OF spot or C, his playing time would never be consistent after a year from now.

I think these two moves will be a pre-cursor to another move to acquire a bat that can play the OF. If I were Cash, I'd call the Marlins and offer Hughes for Morrison. Have him play 4th OF / DH this season and then take over for Swisher next season.

Either way, as much as I loved Montero, the fact is he will never be a catcher and 1b and dh are two spots the yankees have blocked and need open for the foreseeable future.

Some people forget that Pineda was a 22 yr old rookie last year who averaged over 9k per 9, held RH batters to the lowest BAA in the MLB and consistently throws 95-100 as a SP. If you think he's even scratched the surface of his potential, you're crazy. Put him on a team where he doesn't have to try and throw a shutout every time, this kid is going to flourish.

I disagree that Pineda is an ACE. He may somefay be, but he is not now. His ERA+ this year was 103. That's far from an ACE.

What's more, remember when Joba was 22? He looked a lot more like an ACE of the future than Pineda did this past season, his ERA+ then was 171.

Montero was getting better at catching, and the Yankees thought he was going to be as good as Po there. People who say. "He's not a catcher," are are plying insights they just don't have.

Getting Kuroda was good. Trading Montero was bad.

Billy, I believe you called this a while back, that the Yankees didn't value Montero as much because they didn't see him as a catcher.

I think the Yankees go after Carlos Pena now that they need a lefty off the bench.

Kale-

I can't disagree more. Joba was a RP in 2/3 of the games he pitched in that year, let alone he only threw 100ip. How about the next season when he was a SP full time, what was his ERA+ then? 97!

Even in that magnificent season, his xFIP was 3.14 compared to Pineda's who's was 3.53. Pineda started all 28 games, Joba only 12 of of 42! If you give Pineda a few RP appearances, he would of been right around the same.

You're mad about acquiring a 22 yr old who was top 10 in the MLB in K/9 and H/9 in his FIRST season in the MLB. If he was already established as an ACE, theres no way a team would trade him for a glorified DH.

People who say he's not a catcher are telling the truth. Do you know how much faith the Yankees had in him catching? NONE! In one of his 2 starts the yankees got blown out by 15 to the rays and in the other they substituted Romine as a defensive replacement because they didn't trust him. Swapping one rookie for another shows you just how much they thought of his catching abilities.

Of course the yankees are going to say they believe he can catch because if they don't his value deteriorates significantly because DH is a hole easier filled then a stud SP. Why would they try and jeopardize his value? Comeon Kale, you're smarter then that and should have realized it was all a ploy.

This deal also allows the yanks to dangle Betances with a lot more wiggle room for a bat that can actually play a position for us.

I think we must not forget Jose Campos as more then just a throw in. We're talking about a 19 year old, 6'4 195lbs who's leading the league in ERA and K's. He sits 93-96 touching 98 and is still real skinny. I like him better than A.J Cole who Oak got for Gio.

We traded great for average yesterday, and it was just dumb.

Montero has a far greater shot at reaching his potential than Pineda does. Terrible trade.

Montero is about as sure a thing offensively as there is. Pinero better be the real deal.

I'm probably gonna write more on the Yanks tomorrow, then maybe later this week, I'll do a Power Arms column like I used to do during the first few years of the blog.
