Soul's Best Lead Singers: David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams and Dennis Edwards
These are the 4 reasons why the Temptations were the greatest soul group of the `60's and of all times. David Ruffin (who was replaced by the equally talented Dennis Edwards), Eddie Kendricks, and Paul Williams could all knock a song over the most distant fences. They combined with Melvin Franklin (aka David English) who was a fantastic baritone, and Otis Williams who was bad at singing but good at organizing things, to just dominate the group side of things from "The Way You Do The Things You Do" through "Papa Was A Rolling Stone." Ruffin, Kendricks and Edwards also had some solo success after they initially left the group. Sadly, I can't find a video of any of Paul Williams leads, but his magnificent voice is featured sort of prominently on both "I Can't Get Next To You" and singing the little bridge on "Just My Imagination."
