February Film Festival

Miller's Crossing (20th Century Fox, 1990) Written and Directed by the Coen Brothers and starring Gabriel Byrne, Marcia Gay Harden, John Turturro and Albert Finney. This came out in 1990 and it remains one of the best flicks of the decade. The Coens, like many of us, are obsessed with the hardboiled writers who flourished in the early to mid 20th century. Miller's Crossing is their tribute to Dashiell Hammett and is based, primarily, on Hammet's The Glass Key (hmm, I should do a feature on some of these authors...). This is a fantastically entertaining and engrossing movie. The performances in Miller's Crossing are top notch - not just from the stars but from everyone. Jon Polito was a revelation here. The production design and photography (by Barry Sonnenfeld) are perfect. And what about all those hats? If you haven't seen this one, you need to. Check it out.
