Giants Receive Permission to Talk to Pioli

According to radio reports, the Giants have asked for and received permission to talk to Patriot exec Scott Pioli. This is another football personality who sees the Giants as his dream job. I have three concerns about bringing him in.

1) I like Jerry Reese and think he's a more natural choice since he's establish his credentials without the benefit of a brand name coach's influence

2) I'm concerned that Pioli has been more of a Belichick functionary than his own man in NE

3) Franchise/Player relations in NE have been really strained under Pioli's watch, and I'm not sure if that has to do with Pioli intransigence or the owner's reputed cheapness.

Overall, I will like the move if it can be determined that Pioli is his own man and if he can land us the kind of coach who can WIN Superbowls for us.

UPDATE: PIOLI HAS APPARENTLY TURNED DOWN AN INTERVIEW WITH THE GIANTS!

Parcells is his father in law and is no doubt feeling vulnerable right now. I can only imagine the sniffy phone call.

I thought parcells was nice...guess not.....hey whats ur take on Scoops claim on PC becoming coach he was kind of right about johnson trade, but i dunno about pc doesnt sound or feel right

Well, one of the Giant owners does live out here in LA.

YEa but when you have two owners, both have to agree, i would have no problem with PC not my top choice but i think he might actually be good out here, but we just need a real DC coach

If Couglin stays, I'll try ot take a pass on the 2007 season. I can't even listen to him talk without wanting to punch something.

Could Pioli have been put off by rumors that Mara/Tisch aren't on the same page with regard to the future direction of the franchise?

At 6:41 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

No, there's something weird going on here with Pioli and the Pats... Why did the Pats issue his statement? What the hell kind of weird red soxy move was that?

At 6:45 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

maybe pioli waits till pats out of playoffs to interview for job

At 6:45 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

We have to fill the job sooner than that, we need coaches.

This was posted at ulitmateknicks:

sirius satellite radio and nfl network are saying that parcells is talking to the giants about the GM job. pioli (parcell's son in law) turned down an interview for personal reasons opening the door for his father in law.

we're not gonna hire Parcells for GM. He sucks at personel, though he's good at coaching. Ironicall, Coughlin sucks at coaching and is good at personel.

I think coughlin is gone, but i just have that feeling that us fans are gonna get screwed and hes gonna stay...o i hate this crap

At 7:32 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

My pile of Giants stuff depends on them firing Coughlin.

What will it take for the mara's to realize there gonna have a crap load of fans unhappy with this orginization if they keep him

I think they might be offering him an easy way out.

Ill just post it

The Giants have rebuffed an overture from Cowboys coach Bill Parcells about returning to the organization as general manager, according to a high-ranking NFL executive familiar with the team's thinking.

Parcells had informed the Giants through an intermediary that he would be interested in returning to the organization to replace the retiring Ernie Accorsi, according to two NFL executives and a player. The sources requested anonymity because of the private nature of the search

At 11:31 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Could Pioli have rebuffed the Giants because he knew his father-in-law wanted the job?
