Barry Zito Signs with SF Giants

Jon Heyman and others are reporting that Barry Zito has signed with the SF Giants for 7/126M! Wow! I don't know how serious the Yanks were about Barry, but I can assure you they were not 7/126 interested! For the Yanks, this could mean more teams chasing Johnson and Pavano.

He really should be, but Cash can really turn this into - cash - and good prospects! The rest of the NL is the market for RJ and more calls have been coming on Pavano.

It's also a little disingenuous for people like Heyman to report that Zito chose the Giants over the Yankees, among other teams, when they never made an offer.

Boras really is amazing at what he does. No way I thought he would get that kind of green.

Another Yankee discount:

The Yankees had not negotiated with Boras, and Zito was not specifically in their winter plans, one baseball official said. However, if they had dealt Johnson, they would have inquired if only to gauge Zito's market.

But the Yankees apparently had a last-ditch chance to negotiate with Zito. According to a source familiar with the conversation, Zito's father, Joe, called the Yankees and said if the team offered $17 million per year for seven years, his son would like to sign with them. The Yankees declined, the source said.
